About Us
Every post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars is committed to fulfilling the organization's core missions. However, each post varies in its primary focus depending upon the interests and resources of its members. Our post is service-oriented emphasizing service to all veterans in our community. The needs of veterans in Walker County Texas far outstrip our resources even though we have been fortunate to partner with other civic organizations and government. Thus, we welcome all qualified veterans to join in our cause and help us grow our resources. Just as we cared for one another on the field of combat, we must care for one another today, as well as the widows and orphans of our comrades who didn't make it home, .
Qualified veterans are those who serve, or have served honorably, in any branch of the United States military services and deployed to theaters of war during times of active conflict.
In Honor of...
VFW Post 5871 is named in honor of George Melvin White who entered active military service during World War II when Huntsville's National Guard 143rd Infantry Regiment was activated.
In September, 1943, his outfit was involved in one of the war's most violent encounters with the enemy, the invasion by the Fifth Army at Salerno, south of Naples.
Under the command of Lieutenant General Mark Clark, the Fifth Army got the Italian Campaign underway and paved the way for British and American troops to sweep through Italy.
Although victorious, the Fifth Army suffered heavy casualties and those who paid the ultimate price for victory included George Melvin White who was killed at Salerno.
He was the first son of Walker Country to be killed in World War II. This along with the fact that he was a member of Huntsville's National Guard unit, made him very special to the Huntsville community.
Accordingly, it was determined by the Charter Members of Post 5871 that Melvin was most deserving of the honor of his name being used to identify their organization - Melvin White VFW Post 5871.
